Over the last 5 years, I have made many mistakes, had many kitchen disasters and learned a whole lot about how to transition my family from a diet of tiny teddies and pasta bakes (well, there were a few more things than that, but you get the idea…) to a diet of Real Food.
This involved the removal of all highly processed foods we were used to including lunch box snacks (muesli bars, crackers and ‘fruit’ roll-ups), pasta and tomato sauces, ready meal packets (beef stroganoff, creamy mushroom chicken, gravox etc) and margarine.
Now I will say up front, that this was not always easy. In fact, there were many tears and tantrums – and that was just from me!
I spent hours searching the internet for how to do this is in a way that my family wouldn’t hate me forever. I had to learn how to cook from scratch using a very blunt set of knives and a 20 year old food processor (no Thermomix for me then!).
I did this all on a limited budget, with 3 children (then aged 4, 11 & 11), and studying full time and with very limited knowledge (actually, no knowledge at all) on food additives, how to read a food label, why margarine is bad for you or how to cook vegetables other than frozen ones out of a packet.
So let me help you save you a mountain of time and stress, by providing you with some of my lessons learned from the past 5 years to get you started.
