So I was on Today Tonight last week talking about my personal experience with improving my gut health through diet and positive impact this had on my mental and physical health. I was able to come off antidepressants that I had been taking for 3 years, I was also able to come off the strong anti-inflammatories I’d been taking for chronic back pain and I stopped wanting to drive myself over a cliff (yes, I actually wanted to do this several times – even when taking antidepressants).
I also mentioned in the interview that I lost 20kgs through this process…. can you guess what I got hundreds of emails and messages about?
All most people (and all were women), wanted to know was “how did you lose the weight?”. Message after message asked the same question and it really hurt my heart. It hurt because initially, all I wanted was to lose weight too. I thought this was the answer to being happy. Yet, I have been at my “perfect” weight, and I wasn’t happy then either. It hurt because we are so blinded by clever marketing that we believe there is a magic pill or a shake that will make us lose weight and finally we’ll be happy – and believe me, I have tried them all and that magic pill just doesn’t exist!
And it hurt because there were so many beautiful, kind, strong and inspiring women looking to me for help to lose weight, thinking this would be the key to their happiness too.
So, how did I lose 20kgs?
I hope my message has resonated with you. I hope that you can start to look in the mirror and be kind to yourself. And most of all, I hope you realise, you are perfect just as you are, you just need to see that for yourself.
I see you..
